How much does Claude certification cost? $99 to $175, and what is free
Anthropic charges $99 for the Associate exam, $125 for Developer Foundations, $125 for Architect Foundations and $175 for Architect Professional. The exam is never free for someone paying their own way, but the training, the exam guides and an on-time renewal are. Below: every fee, what a failed attempt costs, and a budget for your first year.
The short answer: a Claude certification costs between $99 and $175 per attempt, paid to Anthropic by card before you book a slot with Pearson VUE. What you actually spend depends on three things: which of the four exams you pick, what tier your employer holds in the Claude Partner Network, and how many attempts you need. I passed Claude Certified Architect Foundations in July 2026. Every figure below comes from Anthropic's certification FAQ and its four official exam guides, checked on 18 September 2026.
The fee for each of the four exams
Since July 2026 there are four Claude exams. Each has its own code, question count and fee. All four run for 120 minutes and all four pass at a scaled 720 out of 1000.
| Exam | Code | Questions | Fee per attempt |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Certified Associate Foundations | CCAO-F | 60 | $99 |
| Claude Certified Developer Foundations | CCDV-F | 53 | $125 |
| Claude Certified Architect Foundations | CCAR-F | 60 | $125 |
| Claude Certified Architect Professional | CCAR-P | 63 | $175 |
Prices are in US dollars, before any partner discount. One of them has already moved: Architect Foundations cost $99 until 30 June 2026 and has cost $125 since. Anything written before the summer that quotes $99 for the architect exam is out of date.
The fee buys one attempt. You pay by card on Anthropic Partner Academy, then Pearson VUE emails you a link to schedule, online with a proctor or at a test center. The registration stays valid for five years, so you do not have to pick a date on the day you pay.
Which of the four fits your work is a separate question, and the wrong choice is the most expensive mistake on this page. I compare the audiences, blueprints and difficulty in a side-by-side guide to Associate, Developer and Architect.
Is the Claude Certified Architect exam free?
Not for someone paying their own way. The exam is free for exactly one group: employees of Global Premier partners, who get a 100% discount on every exam until 31 December 2026. After that date they move to the standard partner discount.
| Your employer's partner tier | Discount at checkout | Architect Foundations costs |
|---|---|---|
| Registered | none | $125 |
| Select or Preferred | 50% | $62.50 |
| Global Premier | 100% until 31 Dec 2026, then 50% | $0 in 2026 |
The discount applies automatically, provided your email domain is linked to your company's partner record. When someone at a partner still sees the full price, the domain is usually missing. Adding it takes 7 to 10 days through partner-support@anthropic.com, so sort it out before you plan the exam date.
Several things around the exam are free for everyone:
- The four exam guides. Public PDFs with the full blueprint, the domain weights and sample questions with answers.
- Anthropic's open courses. Claude Code in Action, Building with the Claude API, Introduction to Model Context Protocol and more, on Anthropic Academy with a free account.
- The official prep courses. Official prep courses for each exam on Anthropic Partner Academy, free for anyone at a partner.
- Renewal, as long as you renew on time. More on that below.
One piece of official practice is gone. The official practice exam was retired when certification moved to Pearson on 30 June 2026, and the sample questions in each guide are now the closest official substitute. That gap is why my 60-question Architect Foundations practice exam stays free, with no sign-up.
Anthropic admits to its exams only people from Claude Partner Network organizations. Join our collective of AI consultants and sit all four exams through our partner organization.
What a failed attempt costs
A retake costs the full fee again, with your partner discount applied. On top of the money there is the calendar, because every failed attempt adds a longer wait:
| Attempt | Earliest booking | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| First | any time | full fee |
| Second | 14 days after the first fail | full fee |
| Third | 30 days after the second fail | full fee |
| Fourth | 90 days after the third fail | full fee |
You get at most four attempts at one exam in a rolling 12 months. The limit is per exam, so failing Architect Professional does not stop you from booking Architect Foundations. In money, two attempts at Architect Foundations cost $250 and two at Architect Professional cost $350. The Professional exam is the priciest per attempt, and its seven domains and how they differ from Foundations are worth reading before you pay for it.
You can also lose the fee without answering a single question. Anthropic's FAQ says an appointment has to be cancelled or moved at least 48 hours ahead, and a later change or a no-show forfeits the fee. The exam guides still say 24 hours. Go by the 48, because it is the stricter rule. And cancelling in Pearson only frees the slot. It refunds nothing: a refund is an email to certifications-support@anthropic.com.
The last trap is your name. Pearson checks your government ID against the name on the registration, and they have to match exactly. A mismatch on the day means no exam and no refund. A name correction usually takes 24 to 48 business hours, so send it well before exam week.
What renewal costs
A Claude certification is valid for 12 months from the day you earn it. Renewal is free if you do it on time: you review what has changed and complete a non-proctored assessment on Anthropic Partner Academy. Let it lapse and you sit the full exam again at the full fee. Certifications earned before 30 June 2026, when validity was six months, were extended to 12 months automatically.
At a partner firm there is one more reason not to lapse. The tier counts only active certified people, and active also means you used Claude in the past 90 days. Why firms watch that number so closely is in my look at who hires certified architects and why.
Your first-year budget
Put together, here is what one certification costs in its first twelve months in four typical situations. The example is Architect Foundations at $125.
| Situation | Paid to Anthropic |
|---|---|
| Global Premier partner, pass first time, booked in 2026 | $0 |
| Select or Preferred partner, pass first time | $62.50 |
| Registered partner, one retake | $250 |
| Your employer is not a partner | the fee at the tier of the partner organization you register through: $125 at Registered, $62.50 at Select or above |
The last row is the one the price list does not cover. With a personal email you cannot pay the fee at all, whatever the amount. The ways around that gate are in what to do when your employer is not a Claude partner.
One of those ways is ours. The Certified AI Consultant Program is a collective of AI consultants that sits Anthropic exams through our partner organization. Applying is free. Only if we accept you do you pay $60 a month, billed for two months upfront, and the exam fee goes to Anthropic separately, at the prices above. See how selection works and apply.
How to pay less
FIVE WAYS TO KEEP THE BILL DOWN
- 1. Pick the exam that matches your work. Associate at $99 is the cheapest, and it is also the one that does not count toward a firm's partner tier.
- 2. Check the discount before you pay. At a partner, a full price at checkout usually means a missing domain.
- 3. Do not book before a mock says you are ready. A practice run costs nothing, a failed attempt costs $125 and two weeks.
- 4. Move the date early. Rescheduling more than 48 hours ahead is free.
- 5. Renew on time. On-time renewal is free, a lapse costs the full fee.
For the third point, the practice exam mirrors the real format and scores you per domain, and how I wrote its questions and the order I would use them in is covered separately.
